campaign
Campaign photography is an odd mix of photojournalism/documentaryphotography and promotional work. It's a project against everyday things that goes on in the world. e.g. racism, domestic abuse and self harm.
anti-selfharm campaign
Why I chose this Campaign?
I chose this campaign because I think it's really interesting, it has loads of messages passing through. I want to show how people feel when they self harm, I want to show why they do this. This campaign is really interesting because it's still a breaking news, the amount of people are self harming nowadays teens, young adults and elders, they have their own reasons to self harm. I want to show in my own work why they self harm plus how we're going to stop this!!!! Selfharm is not a minor thing, it's a really painful process.

QUOTES!
*Holding anger is a poison... It eats you from inside... We think that by hating someone we hurt them... But hatred is a curved blade... and the harm we do to others... we also do to ourselves.
*WRISTS are for bracelets not cuttings!
*Hurting yourself will never make the pain go away. And hurting others will never make you happy.
*The end of everything is not to after you die. So never give up. Give everything a try

WHAT IS SELF-HARMING?
Self-harm is when you hurt yourself as a way of dealing with very difficult feelings, old memories, or overwhelming situations and experiences. The ways you hurt yourself can be physical, such as cutting yourself. They can also be less obvious, such as putting yourself in risky situations, or not looking after your own physical or emotional needs.
Ways of self-harming can include:
Self-harm’s not about trying to kill yourself, although those who do self-harm are significantly more at risk of suicide than the average person.

Why do people self-harm?
There are lots of reasons why young people might self-harm. The need to hurt themselves usually comes from emotions that are very difficult to cope with.
Young people might self-harm because it's a way of releasing tension or anger. It’s a physical pain that they can deal with, rather than an emotional feeling that they find hard to cope with.

STOP SELF-HARMING
campaign photography
I really like this picture it's from an anti bullying campaign. It's really interesting because the expressions of the girls face really tells the story. At the back there's shadows of words 'not good enough',which catches the audiences eyes. I think this picture is trying to show that a girl who is very pretty but because of the bullying and hates she's getting, she's really depressed and wants to just isolate her self. They used a projector to project the text on her face and on the back so they took this picture in a studio. Also the photographer used a black and white effect to shows that shes really upset and she has no rainbow in her life, the lack of color in this shot describes the emotions of the girl. The photographer has also used the rule of 1/3.
I really like this picture it's from a anti self harming campaign, it's a really strong image because it's a girl and on the back it says 'love to write on her wrist', however this girl is hiding her face which means she's ashamed of what she has done. Writing is really bold which catches the audiences eyes. The photographer used a plain black background so the focus is only on the girl. I think the photographer wanted to be different so he used the girls back and not her face, to show that she's happy about cutting. The lighting is really bright/strong on the body of the girl and rest is blackout to show audience what the photographer is trying to make you focus on. The back of the girl is the focal point of the image.
I also like this picture because it shows a girl who is smoking cigarette and on her arms there's scars and blood, which shows that shes hurting herself also the picture is black and white contrast shows that it's a sad and upsetting moment. The focus is on the girl rest is out of focus, so the audience focuses on the girl as they used small depth of field. I figured one more thing about this image, the girl is harming herself by cutting but also smoking which is harming her lungs. This image also has compositional triangle which stands out when you look at it.
MY ideas
1. A toilet pass with a sharpener without a blade. In this idea I'm basically trying to show a missing blade sharpener because the person who asked to go to the toilet is about to self harm with the blade, I think this idea will be really eye catching because it really shows the concept of selfharming. To complete this I need to take the blade out and get a paper which says 'toilet pass' and then just place the blade on the pass, I will focus my camera on the text and a little bit on the blade so the audience can see the blade properly. I want to give a glimpse of a teenager who's going through the self harming situation.

3. I will be trying out Photoshop for the first time. For this shoot I will be using a knife and my model will be acting out as if she's self harming. On the knife I will add some reasons why people may self harm. After this I will add a childline logo.
4. My idea for this shoot is to spread awareness of bullying and what kind of words to a young girl can lead to selfharming. I'm going to project numerous amount of words on my model. I will be using a high depth of field to get everything in my shot.

awesome!!
This is my best picture from my first shoot, I think it really shows what I'm trying to convey. I really like the fact that the fstop is set at 5.6 which means that it's only focusing on the sharpener and the blade. The exposure is little bit high which makes the sharpener really bright, it does stand out but I think if the exposure was a little lower it would produce more shadows which then it would look even more eye catching. I'm trying to pass out a message, sometimes people go to the toilet to self harm.
yuck!!
awesome!!
I tried improving my last shoot to reach a higher grade. For this shoot I tilted my camera to get an eye catching angle, the fstop is set on 5.9 which means that it's only focusing on the tie and the blade, I thought if I only took picture of the blade and my tie it would show a school environment. I tried to show the toilet so its easier to figure out what my shoot is about.
YUCK!!
I think this picture is the worst from my take because it is too dark. The lighting of the toilet is too low which then makes the picture look black. More importantly, the problem with this picture is that the blade isn't showing so it is hard to figure out what I am trying to communicate to the audience. One thing that I would improve is changing the location of the picture, so that it is clear enough and eye catching. This would mean that the audience would be more attracted to the picture, it would communicate a story.

re-shoot
To improve this I'm going to use Photoshop. I will place the blade on my model's wrist and then use Photoshop to add some texture and maybe make it look as if its cut and bleeding.

shoot
not sure ....
I'm not really sure if I should call this as my best picture because I was struggling with the focus point and I wasn't really able to focus the poison bottle and my model, it either had to be one or none but I wanted to focus the poison bottle and my model to show what I'm trying to pass through.
yuck!!!

final piece
I created different text and different colors, I cut out the knife and added a another layer and faded the knife so it looks realistic.
improvement ;
awesome!!
So this is my final piece after the improvement I added a childline logo so it relates to something and looks different compared to my other shoots. Also I removed my effects as it looked out of focus. I think this picture is perfect now. I came up with this idea as I realised how sometimes small words that comes out of ones mouth can affect someones life really badly which could lead them to self harming.
last shoot
yuck!!
I personally feel like this is my best picture I tried re-creating the image from my research, the image has perfect exposure making the words clear. I have used a large depth of field because I wanted to display not only the model but also the words in the background. After, looking at my first photographs I felt as though it was not what I wanted and not really eye catching. I decided to improve my shoot by adding the words "it hurts" I had to line up the words by looking through my camera to make sure the words were on the face properly. I then changed the color to make the words stand out on the models face. After, improving my shoot I felt satisfied with my work and effort, what I planned I was able to apply it on my shoot and the outcome was pretty good. I claim this as my last and best shoot because through out all my shoots this one is the strongest and it deserves to be called the best one, yet I liked all my shoots but this one stood out and I think this shoot will help me achieve a higher grade.

evaluation
I believe that if I had a another chance to do this unit, I would change quiet a lot of things. Firstly, I would learn a lot more about Photoshop so I would've been able to use it for every shoot to increase my grade. Also I could have been more creative at the beginning of the project , because personally I didn't really like this unit I wasn't interested. I could've researched more about campaign photography and could've chosen a different unique campaign to make my work standout. Self harm campaign wasn't really exciting because most of the sites were blocked so I had to think everything from my head, I didn't really have many plans so I struggled a bit. If I had a another chance to do this unit again I would either choose anti-racism because nowadays racism is really common so I would have different creative plans to do my shoot and it would have been easy to increase my grade.
