out of place |
Out of place photography can be also defined as surrealism as its all about manipulations and creating seemingly impossible combination of scenes or objects using digital processes. Surreal photography would be more about creating a world or image which goes beyond the physical world as we know it. It usually shows something which would be impossible in real life or tampers with the line defining what is real and what is imaginary.
anja stieglar
Anja Stiegler is a creative photographer and image artist from Wolfsburg, Germany. Most of her images are a mixture of surrelism and conceptualism and takes us into a fascinating world of daydream, where the impossible becomes possible she uses lighting in a very dramatic way, often soft and subtle colours. Anja loves to awake feelings of freedom and happiness by using a wonderful combination of art and colors. She mainly gets her inspriration from music and everyday life but also from other artists like Rus Anson, Tim Walker or Annie Leibovitz.

I really find this image fascinating, it interprets a normal teens life. The bright light coming from the right side really makes the figure of the girl stand out . The shadow behind the girl makes the viewer understand maybe the reason why the shadow may be very suicidal as the shadow is bigger than her this might mean that she fears her own. In my opinion I think it's about a girl suffering in her own mind, and all her thought are haunting her and the way she has her face down it shows that she feels terrified.
tommy ingberg
I like this picture as Ingberg used the rule of 1/3 which really stands out. I also love the background how it's white and it goes very well with the black suites. The man in the middle really stands out as he's different to the rest as he's facing the opposite direction breaking from the crowd. Also, instead of having human parts he has mechanism in his chest. This could be interpreted in many things, maybe he's trying to say how people are so similar to each other with their everyday routine, therefore, Ingberg showed a man opening his suite and looking inside maybe trying to direct how he's trying to stop this everyday routine and change his path because he's a human and not a robot.
The balloons represents the mans thoughts. It shows a mind is full of things waiting for it to burst out in to the world, however we always keep it in. Also, the way he's sitting down emphasising that he's thinking about something. also the position of his hand empahsasing that he's thinking. The black and white contrast suggests the darkness of the man outside whereas his thoughts are white and bright. This is a re-accruing theme which can be explored through my future work.

Robert Rickhoff is a German photographer, re-interprets the idea of public space with humor through a series of digitally manipulated photographs in a project entitled 'out of place'. His work contains normal everyday colours. He uses subtle colours and warm lighting just like Anja.

Rickhoff has used the rule of 1/3 in his shoot, Rickhoff via photoshop has created a shadow under the slide which shows how creative he is also he used very bright natural colours, however he gave a very unusual twist to it. The slide is supposed to have an end however this one doesn't. The slide's colour really stands out as the background is full of natural nature colours whereas the slide is grey/silver and on a sunny day this slide could get very hot which will prevent children from playing on it.
joel robinson

I really like this picture, the focal point of this image is the tree within the leaf and the concept of bright light at the back really stands out. The photographer has used small depth of field to pull out the focal point of the image. The use of warm colours give a feeling of Autumn and they also feel like dream like which is a characteristic of surrealist photography.
plan
1. I'll be doing my first shoot in the style of Anja, I will be taking a picture of myself using self timer. Via shotoshop I will photoshop my eye colour to blue. After, I'm going to print out my portrait on a A3 paper and hold it up and rip it slowly. I will need a medium depth of field so my entire face comes in the shot.
2. For my second shoot, I will do something different. I'll be needing a kettle and a cup, I will pretend as if I'm pouring something in the cup. However, instead of water it will be ice cubes. I will use small depth of field so the camera focuses on the kettle and the cup. I will use the rule of 1/3 to balance everything.

final
This is the final result, to be honest I think I could do much better than this. However, I think its alright for a first try in the style of my photographers. To recreate Anja's shoot, I took a picture of myself using a self timer on the camera. Then, I changed the color of the image to blue to get my shirt to blue from orange colour I thought blue stands out more than orange does. After, I googled an image of blue eyes and via Photoshop I replaced it with my actual eye colour. Then I printed my picture on an A3 paper and again with self timer I tore the A3 sheet. I then used the image and photoshoped it on top of my blue shirt and rubbed out extra bits. Finally, I used the burn tool to give a dark background just like Anja did on her image. However, I think this burn tool ruined my work.
try shoot 2
I didn't like the kettle. Therefore, I used a teapot.

final
Firstly, I cropped out the picture then I searched ice cubes on google and with magnetic lasso tool to cut out the ice cube. I then moved the ice cubes on the tea pot image to make it look as if the teapot is pouring out ice cubes instead of a warm beverage. After, I searched some water drops on google and cropped them out. I played around with the contrast and brightness to make it look realistic. I think the ice cubes went very well with the teapot as it gives the effect of surrealism, I tried to keep the brightness and contrast warm just like Joel does it with his pictures.
unit 2 exam plan
1.Beforehand I will do a shoot at home for my exam. The shoot will be at my house in front of a big mirror. For the first picture my model will be standing in front of the mirror looking at herself with a disappointed face. For my next picture my model will be looking at the camera with a smiling face. I will combine these two pictures together via Photoshop. I will then search an old lady with wrinkles on her face, I will Photoshop this on the disappointed face.
2. For this shoot I will be creating shadows as I thought it will be very different from my previous shoots. I will be re-creating Anjas work. For the first shoot my model will be looking down with an upset expression, the depth of field will be large because I need to make sure the camera focuses on the entire posture of my model. I will then do another shoot using shadows, for this I will need a lamp which will reflect a shadow. I will place this lamp behind my model so her body posture gets reflected on the wall. Via Photoshop I will bring these to pictures together and re-creat anjas work.
3. Firstly, take a picture of two people sitting around a round table holding hands. Then take a picture of the same couple but with a violent imagery. I will then take picture of a plain window and add the 'violent image' on the window and via Photoshop I will change the opacity and make it look like a reflection. I will then add the window behind the couple table.

work done in 10 hours:
piece 1 :
final piece
This is the final result of my shoot, this shoot was pretty difficult as it was really hard to add wrinkles on the models face. I did this shoot at home as I had a very large mirror and I thought it would look more realistic however, I edited this in the 10hours
exam. Firstly, I cropped out the model from an image to place it on a different page with a different image as these two images had different facial expression (just what I needed), I then searched an image on google of an old lady with a wrinkly face as it would be very difficult to create wrinkles on photoshop. I edited the wrinkly face on one of my models picture and then I chanced the variation of the old face as it was very light and looked very unrealistic. After I changed the entire canvas black and white just the way Tommy Inberg creates black and white images. In this shoot I wanted to show how some people are very insecure about themselves and they think they're not beautiful when in reality they are very beautiful.

piece 2:
edit:
final piece
This is the final result, I think I found this shoot very hard as it was very difficult to set the lamp at an angle which would reflect the shadow perfectly on the wall. I firstly, took a picture of the model sitting down looking very upset and then I took the shadow picture with a very confident body posture as it would contrast with the first image of the model looking very scared and not so confident. To make it look even more attractive I searched an image on google of a wall background and I quiet liked this gray background so I decided to use it. I wanted to re-create Anja image so therefore I used the rubber tool with a soft brush and rubbed out the right side of the image just the way Anja did. I wanted to show how some people may have two different personalities.
piece 3:

final piece
I really liked the concept of contrasting images so therefore I came up with this idea. To create this piece I took a picture of a couple holding hands to show the affection of love. However, for my contrast picture I took a picture of the guy trying to punch the girl. whilst I was editing I realised the image i chose first didn't really go well with the window picture as the window image was taken direct whereas the couple image was at an angle. however after I chose this image and these two images went together very well as the emotions are completed opposite to each other. I took a picture of window, where I pasted the picture of the guy punching the girl to make it look like a reflection. I cropped out the window and rubbed out the extra bits and then I dragged it to my first image and I placed it behind my models. I then cropped out the 'punching' picture and rubbed out the extra bits and placed it on the window. I changed the opacity of this picture to make it look as if it's faded. Finally, I changed the window and the 'punching' picture black and white, to make it look surreal as it's showing the reality of this couple.
INSIDE/OUTSIDE
evaluation
I have chosen the theme 'Out Of Place' for my exam. I chose this theme as I really enjoyed my course work topic 'surrealism' so therefore I was really confident with this topic. I also really liked the photographers as their work was completed different to each other which meant I had a wide range of ideas for my shoots. Anja stieglar really inspired me as her work contained shadows and expressions, I was really drawn to the ideas and meaning of Anjas work. Tommy Ingbergs work is mostly in black and white which I really liked so I used his idea and applied it on my shoots. To develop on my shoots I made sure I used Photoshop as it has many tools which helped me build my work as all my photographer used high contrast in their shoots so Photoshop allowed me to change the contrast of my shoots.
